Employment Opportunity: Head Cook

Supervises: Assistant Cook
Term Start: No later than the fourth week of June
Term End: No earlier than last week of August
Wages: $20.50 – $22.50 per hour dependent on experience. Plus accommodations all summer and meals
5 days per week
Overview:
The Head Cook at Camp McDougall is a key team member responsible for creating nutritious, well-balanced meals for campers and staff, maintaining high standards of cleanliness and food safety in the kitchen, and ensuring an organized and efficient meal service. This role involves preparing a standard menu for each camp session in coordination with the Camp Director, managing food orders and budget, and supervising the Assistant Cook and any kitchen helpers. The Head Cook also ensures compliance with Ministry of Health guidelines and Ontario Camps Association standards, fostering a positive and collaborative kitchen environment that contributes to the overall camp experience.
Duties:
- Follow all rules and regulations as outlined in the Staff Manual
- Prepare a standard menu for each camp session, based on Canada’s Food Guide, in collaboration with the Camp Director
- Order groceries and manage the kitchen budget as set by the Board of Directors
- Prepare meals, supervise kitchen helpers, and serve food at mealtimes
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen and dining hall at all times
- Enforce Board policy on kitchen access and supervise kitchen use
- Conduct thorough cleaning of the stove at least once per month during the summer
- Ensure all Health Standards for the kitchen are met according to Ministry of Health guidelines, and accompany Health Inspector during inspections
- Familiarize with and adhere to all applicable standards in the Ontario Camps Association (OCA) Guidelines for Food Service
- Keep a daily log of meals served and quantities prepared
- Attend all training sessions as requested by the Camp Director
Qualifications:
- Experience cooking for large groups (over 50 people)
- Experience with ordering stock and managing a budget
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
- Safe Food Handling Certificate
- Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer CPR certification
- Current Vulnerable Persons Record Check (to be submitted one week before employment begins)
