Wages: Commensurate with experience.

Overview:
Camp McDougall, found on the beautiful shores of Lake Huron near Thessalon, Ontario, is a United Church–affiliated overnight camp that has been providing safe, inclusive, and memorable camp experiences for children and youth for generations.

Our summer program runs throughout July and August (Sunday–Friday), offering campers the chance to build friendships, explore the outdoors, and grow in confidence and faith. Beyond the summer season, Camp McDougall also serves the community through school programs, rentals, and youth group activities, making it a vibrant, year-round facility.

We are seeking a Camp Director to provide vision, leadership, and management throughout the year. This role is part-time during the off-season (September–June) and full-time during the camp season (July–August). The Camp Director will be responsible for both the day-to-day operation of summer camp and the continued growth of off-season programming.

Duties:

Off-Season (September–June, Part-Time)

Program Development & Community Engagement
Develop, plan, and deliver off-season programming for school groups, youth groups, and community organizations (e.g., outdoor education, team-building workshops, retreats).
Build and maintain strong partnerships with schools, churches, and not-for-profit organizations to encourage registration and off-season use of camp facilities.
Represent Camp McDougall in the community, at United Church events, and within the Ontario camping sector.

Fundraising & Development
Research, write, and submit grant applications to secure funding for programming, staffing, and property improvements.
Lead fundraising efforts, including campaigns, donor outreach, and special events. 
Cultivate positive relationships with donors, alumni, and community partners.

Administration & Governance
Act as primary liaison between Camp McDougall, the Board of Directors, and The United Church of Canada.
Provide regular written and verbal updates to the Board, including progress reports, budget updates, and future planning.
Assist in the creation, review, and updating of policies, directives, and the staff manual.
Maintain records, contracts, and required documentation in line with best practices and United Church standards.
Monitor camper registration and fees, and communicate regularly with families to ensure a smooth, welcoming, and organized registration process. 
Marketing & Communications
Manage camp communications, including social media, newsletters, website content, and promotional materials.
Create marketing strategies to promote summer camp, off-season programs, and facility rentals.
Build Camp McDougall’s presence within the wider community, particularly among schools, churches, and families.

Operations & Property Management
Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of camp property and facilities year-round.
Hire, schedule, and supervise contractors for repairs, seasonal openings/closings, and capital projects.
Support logistics and customer service for off-season rentals, retreats, and events.
Ensure health, safety, and accessibility standards are maintained.

Human Resources
Participate in the recruitment, interview, and hiring process for seasonal camp staff.
Ensure staff manuals, directives, and training resources are current and comprehensive.
Develop and facilitate staff training sessions as needed, including off-season leadership workshops.amp season, as well as on performance of program staff and senior counsellors

Qualifications & Skills

  • Proven leadership experience in camp management, outdoor education, or youth programming.
  • Strong organizational, administrative, and communication skills.
  • Experience in fundraising, donor relations, and grant writing.
  • Ability to develop and deliver creative programming for youth and school groups.
  • Comfort with social media, marketing, and community outreach.
  • Knowledge of property/facility management and working with contractors (asset).
  • Familiarity with United Church of Canada values and practices (asset).
  • Ability to supervise and support a diverse staff team.
  • Standard First Aid & CPR (or willingness to obtain).
  • Valid Vulnerable Sector Check (required).
  • Access to reliable transportation to and from Thessalon, Ontario.

Position Details

  • Part-time (September–April): Approx. 5-20 hours per week, flexible scheduling.
  • Some evenings and weekends required for rentals, programs, and events.
  • Salary: Commensurate with experience.
